ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the development and execution of a project to prepare the library at Teachers College for a major renovation of the library building that would temporarily make four of the library’s six floors unavailable. A major part of this effort was developing strategies for handling a collection that had overgrown the facility, including the addition of compact shelving and the long-deferred weeding of the collection. This major effort included monographs, serials, and archives, and all members of the library staff were mobilized for the effort. With the collections effort underway, the library managers turned to reconfiguring the two remaining floors of the building to house the entire staff and support a reasonable full-range of library services for the period of the renovation. This effort required both physical space planning and the development of new digital platforms and services to support patrons outside the building, including a new e-reserve and digital desktop delivery service. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the activities to engage the library staff and the larger college community in developing the design of the renovated floors, and the staff experience working in the much-reduced temporary space during the renovation.
