ABSTRACT

Copyright allows authors to control how their creative expression is copied, distributed and performed, and it covers all manner of books, musical compositions, videos, newspaper articles, recordings, software, TV programs, advertisements, podcasts, email and beyond. Copyright is an increasingly important mass communication issue in postindustrial countries whose information economies depend in large measure on the creation and sale of intellectual property. The same can be said of trademark law, which generally prohibits companies from confusing the public about the origin of a product. This chapter addresses both copyright and trademark law.
