ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 discusses the auditory system, including key terminology such as sonar tracking and auditory processing. It then reflects on common classroom activities impacted by the auditory system such as following instructions, engaging with peers, and participating in music class. Finally, this chapter delineates signs of auditory understimulation, auditory overstimulation, and poor auditory discrimination and provides concrete, practical strategies for each respective sensory need that can be used in the school environment. Included in this chapter are diagrams, interactive scenarios, and an activity to simulate auditory overstimulation.
