ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 discusses the vestibular system, including key terminology such as muscle tone and reticular activating system. It then reflects on common classroom activities impacted by the vestibular system such as sitting upright, paying attention, participating in PE class, playing at recess, and reading/writing. Finally, this chapter delineates signs of vestibular understimulation, vestibular overstimulation, and poor vestibular discrimination, providing concrete, practical strategies for each respective sensory need that can be used in the school environment. Included in this chapter are diagrams, interactive scenarios, and an activity to simulate vestibular overstimulation.
