ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 discusses the tactile system, including key terminology such as homunculus, light pressure touch, deep pressure touch, passive touch, active touch, stereognosis, and graphesthesia. It then reflects on common classroom activities impacted by the tactile system such as writing, sitting or standing by peers, participating in art class, and eating with utensils. Finally, this chapter delineates signs of tactile understimulation, tactile overstimulation, and poor tactile discrimination and provides concrete, practical strategies for each respective sensory need that can be used in the school environment. Included in this chapter are diagrams, interactive scenarios, and an activity to simulate poor tactile discrimination.
