ABSTRACT

Contemporary Western offender treatment mainly takes a rehabilitative approach that aims to correct maladaptive thoughts and behaviours to reduce reoffending. This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines the treatment of high-risk offenders (HROs), namely violent and sex offenders, as key scholars have asserted the importance of providing effective treatment for this population. It explores the benefits and limitations of treatment for this offending population and argues that there is a current movement towards a “creative corrections” approach to offender treatment. The book explores the role of music therapy as a component of treatment for HROs with complex needs. It offers qualitative insight regarding the experienced benefits and limitations of HRO treatment practice, which can be mapped onto the theoretical considerations of existing literature.
