ABSTRACT

PA stands for performance anxiety, and Peter was worried about an upcoming community concert in which he had some solos. Peter is in his early seventies and has been playing his instrument for a long time in community groups. He felt that he was a bit of an impostor as a player. Since chatting is a way of connecting with a client, a number of stories were told about the impostor phenomenon also belonging to the therapist. (Personal disclosure can be useful in certain therapeutic situations.) Ideomotor finger signaling was introduced and used to guide Peter back to an earlier time. He was asked if it would be okay to give up those old anxieties and thoughts since he was so much older and experienced at this time. His “yes” finger rose. Narrative Therapy was then used to rid Peter of a controlling negative agent in him. This chapter contains much relevant commentary. It also contains details about another client who was referred by Peter who also had PA—this is briefly described.
