ABSTRACT

This chapter compares the liberal social contract theories of the origins and purpose of the state with the Marxist theory. The state historically played an integral role in the subordination of women and blacks in the United States and must play an integral role in ending the subordination and in creating a sexually and racially egalitarian society today. Because of its centrality, it is useful to explore different philosophical understandings of the state’s origins and purposes. The origins of the United States and the treatment of blacks and women in its Constitution are also discussed.
