ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the historical background of nationalist activist movements that emerged in postwar Japan. This includes the far-right (uyoku), student movements of the 1970s, the New Right (shin-uyoku), and the historical revisionism movement of the 1990s (the assertive conservative right). Special attention is given to groups that have played a key role in history disputes, such as Nippon Kaigi, Tsukurukai (Japanese Society for History Textbook Reform), and their relationship with Japan’s conservative politicians. This chapter also includes a discussion of the recent rise of internet rightists and the extreme hate speech of the nativist movement.
