ABSTRACT

A basic knowledge of how the timetable works is important for all middle leaders. Detailed technical knowledge is unnecessary but a general understanding of how the timetable is constructed is useful when considering how best to implement the curriculum. Sometimes, a timetabling decision is made which impacts negatively on a subject area but if a middle leader has sufficient understanding of how the timetable works, he or she can suggest alternative solutions to improve the situation. A timetable for the forthcoming academic year will be written during the summer term once pupil numbers and staffing requirements have been agreed. Leaders will therefore need to draw up a clear summary of subjects, teachers, pupils, time requirements and rooms. Strong links between middle and senior leaders are essential if the timetable is to be constructed to meet the needs of all pupils and all subjects.
