ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an introduction into perspectives of sustainable energy deployment in developing countries. It emphasizes that recent developments in the renewable energy sector provide additional motivation for utilizing RES for electricity generation. This study argues that sustainable energy development is a new frontier for many transitional economies, including those countries that are well endowed with traditional energy resources, as exemplified by the case of Uzbekistan in Central Asia. Conceptually, this study seeks to develop a holistic approach to determine how to promote RES deployment in Uzbekistan, applying the Quadruple Bottom Line strategy as a conceptual framework to evaluate social, economic, and environmental benefits and governance as key dynamic components.
