ABSTRACT

Charles welcomed George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham home. His staunch friendship found in the Duke no fault and gave him no blame. The two immediately planned a fresh expedition which should succour Rochelle and retrieve the tarnished honour of the country. On departing, Buckingham freed all French prisoners, and in return the French King sent the English captives as a present to his sister, the Queen of England. Buckingham probably did not make the King privy to it, nor pay attention to it himself. Buckingham had too many large enterprises in hand to stop to consider expense. For days Buckingham had been in the midst of tumults. About a week earlier a mob of seamen came demanding their pay, and one of them tried to pull the Duke out of his coach. Buckingham, leaping out, arrested him.
