ABSTRACT

This chapter begins the description of the step-by-step process of Collaborative Family Work. The setting of ground rules for the sessionscan make it clear from the outset that the method of interaction in the family work sessionswill not be a replication of what happens at home. Regardless of the apparentmotivation of the clients, the role of the professionalworker is to help family members to feel comfortable and optimistic about the potential of family work to help them. The order in which family members are approachedcan be worked out in a constructive way between the primary client and the worker. Generally, if the family members are agreeable, involved in family dynamics and there is no evidence of abuse, violence or intimidation towards other family members, then they should be encouraged to be involved. Family members will want to know justwhat they are agreeing to in terms of the frequency and duration of the family work sessions.
