ABSTRACT
This chapter describes some key linguistic features of academic writing along the dimensions of structure, formality, density, abstraction, objectivity, and rigor. It suggests that it is the deployment of these linguistic features that makes academic writing at once academic and challenging for students and other disciplinary newcomers.
