ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on learning applications describing how robots of all types can support human learners in acquiring or deepening knowledge or skills. Robots can be and have been a good support for teaching many knowledge-based subjects, including geography or history. The practice of using robots as tools for teaching STEM subjects and computer programming is well established and constitutes one pillar of robots in education. The idea of using social robots to prepare students for digital challenges as future teachers has recently been extended to secondary school education and teacher training at universities. The Embodied Perceptive Tutors for Empathy-based Learning European project explored how a robot, which was presented as an “empathic” agent, supported secondary school students. Deploying robots to teach French one day and German the next could simply be a matter of loading a new dialog database and software onto the robot.
