ABSTRACT

Physical change is the kind of change we see the most often in impro. Characters die, heal, lose limbs, transform into aliens, etc. But there is a far more subtle way of creating physical change: the 7 states of tension. This concept was created by French theatre practitioner Jacques Lecoq. This chapter provides exercises to understand and explore all the secrets of the 7 states of tension. It is a formidable tool for creating instant characters and provides a new way of “making things happen” in a story.
