ABSTRACT
Narrative archetypes are models for universal forms of human behavior. These archetypes evoke different aspects of the protagonists’ struggle. Understanding how each archetype functions can be an asset for creating useful characters in an improvised story. This chapter provides techniques for getting to grips with these archetypes both in theory and in practice. The “archetype lists” it proposes offer a highly accessible means of experimenting different character types.
