ABSTRACT

The chapter will outline and critique the central theoretical concepts of Subaltern Studies and postcolonial theory such as the autonomy of peasant politics, the split between subaltern and elite domains, fragments, Marxism as a part of Eurocentric universalism, culturalism, externality of modernity, the glossing over the structural aspects of capitalism, governmentality, passive revolution and political society. It will also critically engage with Vivek Chibber’s work on Subaltern Studies and postcolonial theory. Further, it will make some theoretical observations about the communist movement.
