ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses narratives (and storytelling) on the smartphone. Narratives have always been pervasive on the internet since the web 2.0 turned up (e.g. blogs), and these have adapted to the smartphone interface. The chapter starts with some comments on narratives from a cyberpragmatic standpoint. New digital narratives often lack a progressive development of the story, which impacts user satisfaction upon processing them. Next, some comments are provided differentiating types of digital narrative, with an emphasis on transmedia narratives. The chapter then moves on to the specificity of smartphone narratives. First, some contextual constraints are listed. Then, a classification of types of smartphone narrative is proposed: imported, native, social networking, cross-media, transmedia, locative, and technology-generated. The next section is about narratives on social networking sites. Finally, the chapter ends with a description of the impact of smartphone narratives on users’ identities.
