ABSTRACT

There need not be very deep reflection to realise that communication, in one form or another, enters into all our human activities. There is a form of communication at an unconscious level of bodily activity where internal processes are constantly adapting to one another. When a person moves his arm there is a finely elaborated system of communication between his brain and his arm that enables him to perform this simple action. When some body is pricked by a pin there is started a channel of impulses beginning at the level of his skin and continuing to the brain. We have also to remind ourselves that the name given to those chemical substances which are secreted by the endocrine glands and are carried by the blood to initiate activity to another organ hormones-are the Greek name for messengers. Apart from the internal environment of our bodies and the information selected from the outside world, there is the daily interchange of information between people. This can be verbal or non-verbal, the former relying on language and the latter mainly on gestures. Lastly society may be said to be organised through communication, by means of correspondence, telephone exchanges, radio, television and the like.
