ABSTRACT

Cane planting began at Kenana in mid-1977. By the end of 1979 it covered 13,500 hectares, and agriculture at Kenana had become an undisputed success story. The yield figure at that stage was more than the original estimate, and cane planting was well ahead of progress on the factory, which had fallen behind schedule. In 1980, Keith Rhodes, the acting agricultural manager, could boast: ‘I defy anyone, anywhere in Africa, to better this cane.’
