ABSTRACT
Our journey through the history of teaching in America is nearly complete. We have seen how teachers in the past have struggled through two educational transitions but have emerged from each better educated, better trained, and better able to meet the challenges of a new society. Teachers have often learned the hard way how to deal with the changing whims of parents, the local community, paternalistic administrators, and state and municipal politicians.
