ABSTRACT

Before discussing aspects of selecting and using resources for teaching gifted young children, let us reflect on what we are aiming for. Based on the principle of the two-way process of provision and identification, the following may be summarised as our aims:

Providing children with an intellectually challenging teaching programme to extend their knowledge and conceptual understanding.

Allowing children sufficient freedom for exploration and using their imagination.

Acknowledging children's creativity and individual learning styles.

Identifying children's strengths and talents - both in general and domain-specific terms - and using that knowledge as a basis for provision.

Being aware of the particular social and emotional needs gifted children may have.

Recognising the important role played by adults both for identification and provision.
