ABSTRACT

Viotti returned from the Continent just two months before the start of Salomon's 1794 concerts in the Hanover Square Rooms. Violin duets performed by Viotti and Salomon had been a popular attraction in the 1793 Hanover Square concerts, and were continued in 1794. In the twelfth and final concert the audience was delighted by a Viotti–Salomon duet played 'in a very bold and finished style'. Viotti also played at Haydn's benefit on 2 May, and led the band for Salomon's benefit on 28 May. His own benefit was given on 23 May. No mention of Viotti was made in the Morning Chronicle's review of the Haydn benefit, nor was there a review of his own. The Morning Chronicle announced that for the Viotti benefit there were to be two new concertos, one of which was for viola. Viotti was a consummate performer, polished and confident.
