ABSTRACT
When I was in the twenty second year of my age there being much conversation And vague reports in the place where I Dwelt <Hardwick> about Mother Ann Lee and the people called Shakers I had the curiosity <to make> them a visit accordingly in the month of February 1783 I went to Ashfield in the State of Massachusets where Mother and the Elders dwelt and was kindly received and taught my Duty towards God and the wourld of mankind to confess to God before his witnesses all my Sins and where I had ronged or defrauded any <one> to make restitution. I received faith in Mothers testimony and confessed all my sins in my kowledge I had interviews with Mother and the Elders at different times [and having Lately seen a spurious handbill debasing adulterating and degrading Mothers caracter to the Lowest ebb] I believed it to be my Duty to make a Statement of facts within my knowledge – I saw Mother twice at Ashfield and <staid> each time about a week and twice Mother visited David Hammonds 1 where I made it my home and staid one time about a week the other time 14 days. twice I visited Mother and the Elders at Watervliet and staid about a week at a time and was there at the time of her decease – And I can testify in the presents of him with whome we have to do and before all men that I had free intercorse to Mothers dwelling room and that I never saw any sines of intoxication or lewd indecent behaviour by day or by night but <she> was a pattern of righteousness I have been a member of the Society 43 years and am now in the 65 year of my age
