CHAPTER I
I A M not going to speak in this volume of India, where I spent some fifteen months under particularly agreeable circumstances. I cannot look back on that period of my life without a feeling of gratitude to those who did so much to make it profitable and pleasant for me, and it was much to my regret that circumstances obliged me to return to Europe.
