ABSTRACT

Overwhelmingly, even more than in the fashion arena, the movie leaders can be found among the girls, the young, single women with fewest family responsibilities. The difference between the girls and the wives, then, is the difference between a woman relatively unburdened with family responsibility, and a mother with a full load of family responsibility; more than that, it is the difference between an unmarried girl and the role of movie-going in her social affairs, and a young woman who has “settled down.” Since movie-going is so strongly characterized by its group nature, it seems highly reasonable to suppose that it is within the movie-attending groups themselves that most of the give-and-take about movies and the movie world goes on. While being young and unmarried is associated both with more frequent movie-going and more frequent leadership chances, within each age group the very frequent movie-goers are more likely to be leaders than those who go less often.
