ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors focus on the fact that shared opinions and attitudes go along, hand in hand, with interpersonal relations. First of all, there is the kind of change in opinions, attitudes or values which may accompany a motivated move from one group to another. Seeking and gaining acceptance in a new circle seem to lead an individual to bring his opinions and attitudes into line with the new group. The studies the authors have seen so far all illustrate the way in which the group functions as a medium for changing individual opinions, attitudes and habits. It would follow that if motivated group membership is really so closely linked with pressures toward conformity, then group pressures on opinions and attitudes should be most strongly felt by those who are most attached to the group.
