ABSTRACT

We are confronted by two choices: either dialectic without ideals or ideals without dialectic. Neither one was acceptable to Plato or Socrates. Which is why both ended up imprisoned. Plato escaped because he was imprisoned unjustly by inhospitable foreigners who first invited and then betrayed him. Socrates accepted his fate because he was imprisoned by his kinsmen who lost their way and needed one last lesson from him in order to see their error.
