ABSTRACT

In some ways the interview technique used here is unfair to intellectuals, most of whom tend to express themselves best in writing. Though rough edges are revealed, the interviews do show how people think on their feet and in the case of intellectuals this is very important to know. I must confess to a feeling that the portrait which emerges here is a harsh one and unflattering at best. But the sixties have left intellectuals in a terrible quandary and it would be unfair to them if their predicament were in any way concealed or whitewashed. For it is out of confusion that intellectuals best create a new synthesis.
