ABSTRACT

Learners with Visual and Hearing Impairments can sometimes be reluctant to wear their supportive aids, such as glasses and hearing aids, in school. Often, they are worried about appearing ‘different’ to their peers or about being teased or bullied. This then creates a barrier to their learning as they are not able to access lessons. You can help this by ensuring that any comments or teasing are dealt with rather than ignored, and, if you notice that a learner is not using their supportive aids, having a conversation with them away from the classroom about what the issue is to see whether there are any steps you can take that might help. If it becomes an ongoing issue, liaise with pastoral and Learning Support Teams to see whether a joined-up approach is necessary.
