ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part provides a step-by-step guide to the Survival Skills Programme itself. A colleague who is skilled in working with pupils who have emotional and behavioural difficulties is vital to understanding pupils’ needs and the success of the programme. Space to store their work folders and the resources for the programme would be useful. An ideal room might also contain some computers for research or to enable certain aspects of the work to be completed on a word processor. For the programme to be successful, pupils must engage readily with the work and be prepared to attend all the sessions regularly and punctually. It is important that the lessons are held in the same room and have a similar format. It is suggested that each lesson begins with a task set out in the room for the students to begin as soon as they enter.
