ABSTRACT

Mercator is an old company. Its legal predecessor was 'Zivila, Ljubljana', established in 1949. The Mercator name appeared for the first time in 1953. Mercator is the largest trading corporation in Slovenia with 13,208 employees, and involving 23 companies. The Mercator group's core business is wholesale and retail trade in consumer goods through a wide network of shops and shopping centres. Mercator's key objectives in the 2000-2003 period are to become one of the top 200 trading companies in the world and an important player in Central and Eastern Europe compatible in all important elements of its supply, quality organization and business performance with the biggest global and European trading firms. Mercator was the first trading company in Slovenia to enter into a joint venture with Interspar in 1989. The Mercator group has an ambitious growth plan that cannot be successfully put into practice in Slovenia alone.
