ABSTRACT

A hierarchy is an organizational system that is structured in a treelike manner, with levels of status or authority stacked one above the other. Hierarchies are about human and corporate mobility. The classical and best known example of a hierarchy is probably the typical diagram that describes the structure of a company or business, also known as The Corporate Ladder. Every one of us is an everyday participant in a very large number of hierarchies. When Newfoundlanders move to Ontario to seek out new employment opportunities people usually do not give it a second thought, even though it is a part of the same process of upward migration in the economic hierarchy. The Canadian economy is a part of the North American economic hierarchy, and it is only natural that talented individuals will make their way upwards in the economic hierarchy to take advantage of the economic opportunities that exist at the top.
