ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses "Thoughts and Attitudes" module which includes 13 therapeutic sessions designed to facilitate a process of learning to identify, evaluate, and modify thinking and cognitive attitudes that contribute to criminalness and perpetuate impaired mental health functioning. The sessions educate participants about different types of thinking styles that support their involvement in crime and interfere with their mental health recovery, and utilize cognitive-behavioral strategies to modify these thinking styles. The first session teaches participants the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and subsequent behavior. Session two teaches the eight types of criminal thinking errors. Session three educates participants about the presence of criminal thinking and the effect of criminal thinking in their lives. Session five educates participants about automatic thoughts, including the impact of automatic thoughts on behavior. Session nine ensures that participants continue to challenge their automatic thoughts and related criminal thinking.
