ABSTRACT

Try to imagine how you would describe a particular apple without seeing it. You could do it (describe how it feels and smells. . .), but it might be hard. The same is true with data. You can describe data without visualizations, but it is hard to do. Since description is one of the first tasks in working with a dataset, visualizations are a great place to start. Unit II covered the basics of descriptive statistics. Unit III takes the same ideas (e.g., mean and standard deviation) and shows how researchers visualize these concepts with graphs and figures. In essence, you get to see the description, instead of just reading about it.
