ABSTRACT

The fundamental reorientation for taking a narrative-based approach involves seeing the world in terms of dynamic and interactive processes rather than static or linear ones. It also involves seeing professional conversations as shared acts of creation between someone with a problem and someone else with expert knowledge and skills. Most professionals embarking on a narrative approach find it useful to learn a simple conceptual framework at the outset. Practitioners can benefit from a simple framework of concepts to guide them in taking a narrative-based approach. "Conversations Inviting Change" offers such an approach, using seven words beginning with the letter C. This chapter emphasises the seven concepts in "Conversations Inviting Change". The seven concepts are: conversations; curiosity; contexts; complexity; challenge; caution; and care. The chapter illustrates cases from participants on the courses and workshops, and other narrative practitioners.
