ABSTRACT
What is an accurate, neutral, and informative designation for the assemblage of parchment leaves left to us by Villard de Honnecourt? Appellations vary widely for two reasons. First, no one knows why the drawings and textual addenda were made. Second, various authors have selected a name depending on what they wanted the assemblage to be rather than what it is physically. These designations generally are conceptual rather than descriptive.
