ABSTRACT

Thirty-three leaves survive in the Portfolio, a total of sixty-six surfaces. Forty of these sixty-six surfaces (60.6 percent) bear drawings and text by Villard and/or others who came after him. Twenty-four surfaces (36.4 percent) contain drawings only, and two surfaces (3.0 percent) contain text only. By Villard himself or his scribe there are inscriptions on twenty-six surfaces (39.4 percent). Fourteen leaves (21.2 percent) have inscriptions on both the recto and verso surfaces; nine (13.6 percent) have inscriptions on the recto surface only; and five (7.6 percent) have inscriptions on the verso surface only. Clearly, no discernible pattern is involved.
