ABSTRACT

This chapter will first describe some of the problems regarding the application of classification schemes to the retrieval of Internet resources, and will discuss briefly search engines and resource catalogues, two currently popular methods of resource identification. It will then move on to consider usage of the well-known universal, and better-known specialized schemes in catalogues and gateway services. Next, it will consider the possibilities of automatic classification techniques using the universal schemes, and will look at two examples. The chapter concludes with a look at some ideas for the future of classification and document retrieval on the Internet.
