ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights some of the major developments leading to the present situation in the United Kingdom and charts a similar course in respect of Canada. The tendency for Holocaust survivors to keep their memories to themselves was reflected in the dearth of memoir literature published in the United Kingdom after Second World War. Holocaust consciousness has reached unparalleled levels and it is thus not surprising that since 1990 the subject has formed part of the National Curriculum in England and Wales. The decision to incorporate the Holocaust into the National Curriculum appears to have caused some apprehension among teachers, judging by Carrie Supple's survey of 35 schools in the north-east of England. Since the 1980s, the Spiro Institute in London has had as one of its major activities the training of Holocaust educators. Ontario has seen the enactment of provincial legislation to proclaim Holocaust Memorial Day.
