ABSTRACT
The composer and performance theorist John Cage was a famous advocate and creative user of, what I will call, active chance. This is not canned chance but chance as free agency. Active chance surpasses the author’s control to produce changeable, pluralistic and performative configurations rather than fixed outcomes.
