ABSTRACT

Socrates was one of the great classical Greek philosophers. He was unequivocally a founder of Western philosophy. He also served in the Athenian military. He is best known through the writings of his student Plato. Through Plato's dialogues, Socrates has become renowned in multiple fields, among others, of knowledge. He developed what has become called The Socratic Method. The Socratic scheme of inquiry is based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and illuminate concepts, ideas and theories. The Socratic Method is a method of un-covering the bare bones, by steadily finding truths. The basic form is a series of questions formulated as examinations or tests, to help a person to discover truths. That the method in Plato's allegory of the cave is like the psychological autopsy process is obvious. The allegory is a metaphor for the Socratic scheme of inquiry.
