ABSTRACT

As part of the analytical process, the programmatic requirements of the new function need to be examined to ensure compatibility between the old and new. It is not just a question of size but also of harmony. To understand the exact requirements of those who are to occupy the remodelled building is very essential, for example it may be important that certain areas are shielded from direct sunlight or indeed from any natural light at all and conversely some activities would positively benefit from contact with the afternoon sun. Some functions may require small individual rooms and others large open spaces and the intimate hierarchy of those who are to occupy the spaces needs to be appreciated. Those who occupy the remodelled building generally want to feel that it is theirs, and that their functional requirements have been met and yet the past has not been obliterated but incorporated and embraced as part of the pattern of the present.
