ABSTRACT

One of the greatest concerns for the twenty-first century population is the search for a sustainable future; there is a growing global awareness of limited resources, expanding ecological footprint and climate change caused by excessive carbon emissions. The architect and designer can help facilitate this exploration through the remodelling of the existing structures. Building reuse is an extremely sustainable method of development. The environmental movement’s international slogan, Reduce/Reuse/Recycle, is a manifesto for the way to live in the twenty-first century, and is especially pertinent to interior architecture and the adaptation of structures. The embodied energy in these elements can be saved through upgrade and reuse; through adaptation the amount of natural resources required to construct a building is greatly reduced, and the building can be designed to be used in a sustainable manner.
