ABSTRACT

This chapter will discuss the historical entry of women into the corrections profession, current trends in employment, and provide an overview of challenges that they commonly face on the job. All facets of corrections will be covered from women working as wardens, working in corrections, or who are leaders in re-entry. A significant portion of the chapter will devote attention to presenting their own narrative experiences in their career trajectory, including the obstacles they faced, how they overcame challenges, and recommendations for future female criminal justice leaders. Regional differences as well as the intersectionality of gender and race in experiences will be highlighted throughout the chapter.
