ABSTRACT

Gender-based discrimination in the workplace and in the political realm would be abolished, and equally qualified men and women would have equal accessibility to any job, profession, or office they desire. Similarly, within the family, men and women would be equally free to occupy any combination of roles traditionally associated with either men or women. The place of gender in the family is one of the most difficult and controversial areas in which to seek common ground. Some have to do with equality and the various ways in which women have been denied equality in their society: sex discrimination, sexist language, sexual harassment, rape, pornography, hate speech, and reproductive rights. Sexism, sexual harassment, and sexual intimidation are all violations of the law in the United States and in western liberal democracies, but there are still many countries in which this is not the case, countries where women have little recourse to protect themselves from abuse and intimidation.
