ABSTRACT
This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book looks at what is now becoming known as the Greater Bay Area between the southern coastal province of Guangdong and Hong Kong and Macao, the part of China that has been at the forefront of China's engagement with globalization since the 1980s. It explores the response from Chongqing, a city that grasped this challenge in a proactive and often innovative way. The book explores the development of regional policy and China's regions since the establishment of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949, with a particular focus on where changes in regional policy and development during this period have not only been a function of domestic dynamics. It also looks at the role of China's regions in the belt and road.
