ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to review the outcomes of the interplay between the institutional structures, policies and ideologies of the railway and planning sectors in the 1969–94 period. Conclusions are drawn as to whether these were largely positive or negative with regard to the utilisation of the railway network. As in Chapter 7, this chapter is split into two halves around 1979, and the dialogue broadly follows the same pattern of reviewing national outcomes, and then dropping down to review those in London, the provincial conurbations and the areas outside.
