ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the characteristics of different types of observation. It explains how to record an observation. The chapter discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using observation when collecting data. It describes the ethical issues associated with conducting observation. Using classroom observation videos uploaded on a video-sharing website, the adult facilitator can help the children to practise a structured observation. The chapter explains the different uses of visual materials in social research. It outlines the advantages and disadvantages of using visual materials when collecting data. The chapter also describes the ethical issues associated with using visual materials. For ethical reasons, original data collected from research participants are usually destroyed after the research. When reporting their research findings, the children will need to explain how they found them out so that their readers will be able to assess the findings for themselves.
